10% Skill 90% Luck

May 2, 2008

This does not apply to all the pictures I have ever taken (often they depend more on location then luck) but I attribute the following picture to luck more then my photographic skill that has developed over the years.

So it’s not a lake its the Grand Canyon. And now do you understand the luck behind the picture.

The luck: The weather. What was occurring was called an inversion (sp?). It had snowed a few inches the day before (by the way this was early aprilish, I forget the exact date). The bottom of the canyon held warm air and the top was freezing. Because of that clouds rise up from the bottom of the canyon and sit on top creating something that looks like a lake.

The Skill: the framing of the picture. I took like 20 pictures from the same spot but this one was the best. The framing of the green bushes makes it look more and more like a lake.

This is probably one of the best pictures I ever took in high school so enjoy it.

The great photos I’ve seen are about 50% location, 25% skill and 25% luck –totally random figures pulled out of nowhere 8)

It seems like a great place is half the battle though and skill and luck are equal partners in the rest of the success.
