Photoshop…attempting something new

July 25, 2010

I’ve been working with photoshop a lot lately and have been continuing trying to teach myself all the different aspects. So I created these two pictures each with different looks that I am trying to achieve. Please give me your honest feed back, I’m looking to improve.

In this picture I wanted to hint at an artificial, almost drawing medium, to the picture, especially with the flower in the foreground. I also wanted to make the flower ‘pop’ more by. So, was I able to achieve this? (You’re gonna have to enlarge the picture.)

In this picture I wanted to place a word in the picture that was barely noticeable, attempting to create a focus in an unsaturated picture. So pretty much how noticeable is the word in the middle, can’t tell there is something there or can see something? Can you read what the word says?

If you want to give it a more artificial feel, you can play with the colors on the first image or select the flower portion and play with the saturation. It does look artificial, but I think you can take it a step further and not sacrifice the image. It’s about finding a balance.

Text in photos can become overpowering, so you have to be really selective in what you choose as text, how much to put (you don’t want a whole paragraph to take away from the image), placement, and text style. The text in your image is noticeable, though I would try different locations and see if it changes the feel of it.

    Take care Maggie. Miss you!

Best of luck with this… I never really managed to get on with Photoshop so I don’t bother with it.

That top pic certainly pops, though I wouldn’t have said it looks particularly artificial.
As for the bottom one, well, there’s definitely a word there but I’m having a hard time deciphering it.

I love the first photo; the white flower definitely pops right off the page—very effective. I am not particularly enamored of the second photo—the hibiscus word is intrusive to me—easily read. Great work!
